Safe Use of Pesticides and Handheld Applicator (PA1/ PA6)
Since 2015, anyone buying a pesticide authorised for professional use must obey a key legal requirement. The law demands that the pesticide will be used either by the holder of a relevant certificate, or by a person working under the direct supervision of someone who holds one.
This course has been developed in direct response to that legal requirement for pesticide use. You will earn a recognised qualification that reflects the national standards for the type of role you perform.
Once you hold a PA1 you can then complete a PA6 for applying pesticide with a knapsack or hand lance.
If your job involves applying pesticides in a commercial role then you are legally required by the Chemicals Regulation Directorate (CRD) (Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986) (as amended) to take this CoC qualification.

What will be covered PA6?
- Preparation of a handheld pesticide applicator for work, calibrate it and operate it to ensure correct application rate without risk to themselves, other people and the environment.
- How to use the information detailed on product labels to determine the approved uses for the product and its potential hazards to human safety, non-target areas and the environment in general.
- How to carry out daily and routine maintenance on a handheld pesticide applicator.
- How to carry out the correct procedure for cleaning personal protective equipment and application equipment which may have been contaminated with pesticide.
